Principal's Message

 

Welcome to Bret Harte! I am Martha Walter, the principal at Bret Harte. Our entire staff strives to make every year successful for your child. Your active support and cooperation, combined with our best professional efforts, will ensure academic success for your child.

We are proud of our staff and students and invite you to be involved in Bret Harte. There are many opportunities to visit our classrooms, school office, library, cafeteria, and playground throughout the year. There is a spirit of cooperation and progress at our school we would like to share with you.

The goal of our school is to provide each student with a challenging and rigorous curriculum appropriate to his or her academic level. We believe every child can achieve academic success. To this end, every child is provided with quality instructional experiences which recognize, support and maintain high expectations for all students.

With parents and teachers working together as a team, towards the same goal, every child will succeed. In order to give each child the best opportunity for success, we ask that everyone keep children first in all that we do. If we accept and make real the pledge to keep children first, then it follows that education is our #1 priority. A school community with these two concepts as our core value and our common cause will stand ready, willing and able to do what is needed for educating children. I know our Bret Harte School community is such a place.

At Bret Harte, we take the business of loving and teaching children seriously. Every person at our school approaches his or her task with a keen understanding of the honor that it is to be able to touch the future through the children. Work of this importance cannot be done alone for several reasons. First, because by its very nature we are dealing with very fragile material…a child’s mind. Second, when we work together we get more done than if each person worked alone. None of our efforts are as good as all our efforts together!

As your principal, you can expect that I will reach out to you and ask for your support, ideas, suggestions and involvement. I will encourage you to join our team, our school family so to speak, where preparing children for the future is our number one priority. I pledge to do my very best to ensure that each child is challenged, nurtured, and provided with a safe and stimulating learning experience.

As we work together during the year, I invite you to stay in contact and let me know how your child and you are experiencing school. There will be many opportunities for contact with me. Please don’t hesitate or ever think your comment or concern is unimportant. Through team work, open communication, and a dedication to continuous improvement, we make Bret Harte a place where children delight in and enjoy learning. We look forward to working together as partners in learning!
